Day 9: Props and Personality

Who says you need to use props properly?

After all, when a hat is sitting on a head, it’s just a hat…

But when your naughty puppy (okay, he’s an adult, but don’t tell him) steals it and decides it’s the best toy of the night, throwing it around, leaping and growling, then you’d better snap some photos.

Because these moments are going to really show the true character of your pet. Whether they get so sleepy that they doze off while using the hat as a pillow, sit perfectly still while it slides over their eyes, or look like they’re plotting your murder while it sits in a puddle at their feet…

These things all tell far more powerful stories than having them perfectly posed with the hat on their head (which is also perfectly ok, as you’ll see.)

To capture these moments you’ll need to either get lucky, or instigate the action.

If you know you have a sleepy, lazy pup, why not pop the hat on the floor and invite them to nap?

If you have a silly rambunctious idiot dog, why not start a game of “Who is the fierce” and snap photos as they’re throwing the prop around or destroying your carefully arranged gifts?

Capture their movement, their expressions, and their personalities in the way they interact naturally with the props.
