Day 12: It Was the Night Before Christmas....

I had an idea, after snooping around on Pinterest for inspiration…

The idea of a little Snooty Border Collie creeping down from bed on Christmas Eve.

The whole house is asleep and quiet. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

And he unwraps his present before anyone else is awake.

You remember that feeling, when you’re a kid, and Christmas was so magical, and getting up to see all the gifts under the tree (if you were like us and Santa came Christmas Eve when you were sleeping. Christmas over in Europe seems weird and happens on Christmas Eve?? But then how does Santa come!??!?!)

I wanted it to feel a bit like this. Like this kid has snuck down and opened his gift before anyone else was up, and it was just this magic.

Here’s how we did it:

  1. Place a light-source inside the box. It doesn’t have to be super strong like a flash or something. Your phone with the flashlight could work, or some fairy lights.
  2. Turn off most other lights in the space. Your main light-source is coming from the box.. depending on what effect you want, of course. I wanted it a bit darker and mysterious. The more ambient light you have in the scene, the less obvious the magic box light will be.
  3.  Expose your photo, whether using phone or camera, so that you can SEE the light from within the box shining on the dog’s face, and that the light isn’t blown out. You might need to make the photo darker than normal for this!
  4. Tell your dog to wait, or have him on a leash with a helper. Throw a treat in the box. Capture the moment he looks at the treat. Tell him “ok!” so he can eat the treat. Repeat.
  5. Edit! I added a glowing effect overlay and a bit of Christmas sparkle from an overlay pack I bought on Etsy.
