Everyone wants their subject – whether dog, cat, horse, or other pet to “pop” in their photo. It’s no use having them blend into the background!

But how to get them to pop?

Most people tend to either make the background super hazy to try and hide all the other stuff going on, OR, they over-edit the eyes. And I’m sorry to say, that neither of these are particularly good techniques.

Instead, we need to be thinking in terms of contrasts. And I don’t just mean the contrast slider in Lightroom! I’m talking about:

• detail vs soft
• light vs dark
• contrast vs low contrast
• colour vs desaturation
• contrasting colours

Both on location AND in editing, there are ways we can utilise the different forms of contrasting elements in our photos to make our subject really POP.
