The learning community has been such a wonderful learning place and I feel like I learn something every time I’m on it! What started off as me wanting to learn photoshop better led me to not only doing that but learning more in depth about the behind the camera elements which are the basis of everything! The mixture of editing tutorials, courses, videos on different areas of dog photography, feedback on your own photos and a server to answer any questions is the perfect way to improve beyond what you even thought you could. I 100% recommend joining!

I can’t recommend this Learning Community enough! I gained SO much from working with Emily and taking the courses. Everything is super easy to understand and some of the tips will blow your mind haha. Makes you wonder why you didn’t think of things like this before 🤣 My photography has improved no end! I actually feel somewhat confident in my abilities and I now look at my own work and others with a more critical trained eye. My favourite thing about the LC is how well priced it is! Emily is always available to chat to and you have access to all the content like courses, specific edits, workshops and more! As well as an amazing Facebook community who support and help each other through the ups and downs of photography. If you’re on the fence about subscribing, don’t be – you won’t regret it and your photography will benefit no end.

THANK YOU Em for creating this special place! Joining the LC has really been one of the best decisions I’ve made this year & it helped me grow not only in pet photography but also as a person. May the journey continue!

Where do I begin? Emily is such an amazing photography teacher. She has everything that I look for in a teacher. She is kind, supportive and knows what she’s talking about. Not only that but she also has such a lovely personality and you can tell that she has a strong passion and interest for what she’s doing. I’ve learnt so incredibly much from her already. I’m going to have to be honest here. When I first looked through the course I didn’t think I was going to learn too much from it. But let me tell you, I was so wrong. Em’s ‘Improve Your Pet Photography’ course has helped me with my photography really much. It has helped me think more about the light and the camera settings for different types of photos. For example, she has taught me to preferably not shoot so much in direct sun light, but she’s also taught me HOW to do it correctly if I have to. Even the smallest details that I’ve learnt from her really makes a big difference. The best thing about the course (for me) is that it’s sooo easy to follow and fits both beginners and more advanced photographers.

Prior to taking this course I taught myself photography by trial and error, and always wondered why some photos had such great impact and others really didn’t. Emily’s insight taught me a huge amount about all the little details I could tweak to get better photos, whether that was why my images weren’t pin sharp, why the composition wasn’t working or the best ways to work with lighting for my little black dog. A lot gets covered with lovely visual examples, and gets you thinking more deliberately about how and where you shoot. This course is amazing whether you’re just starting or you have experience and want to fine tune your in-camera process!

Learning Community FAQ

Do you like taking photos?

Do you want to take better photos?

If you answered yes, then the LC is right for you.
Seriously though, there is so much content inside the LC, from the courses through to the workshops, critiques & Q&A sessions that there is something for everyone

Yes of course!
I’ve never wanted anyone to feel like they had to go out and buy a camera or fancy lens in order to participate.

will talk about camera settings, and the “Improve” course goes over these in detail, as well as different types of lenses and things to consider, however it’s not a requirement.

In fact, I think if you’re taking photos with your phone, that learning the fundamentals is even more important.

Definitely!

Whether you’re still on complete Auto-mode on your camera, or you’ve never used editing software before, there will be something for you.

The entire “Improve” course is built around complete beginners, and there have been several workshops so far aimed specially at beginners, to help build confidence in navigating their camera & camera settings, and in the very beginning stages of using Photoshop. The Lightroom course also breaks down how to use each tool.

As well, you can ask any questions in the Facebook group or group Discord server, no matter how silly (spoiler alert, there’s no silly questions), and the monthly critique sessions provides a chance to get feedback on what you need right now (plus it’s super helpful to watch other people’s critiques!)

While all of my tutorials are based in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, it is possible to use many of the techniques in other programs.

I have recently created lessons exploring Affinity and Pixelmator Pro, to see how the programs vary, which features, keyboard shortcuts and techniques match up, and which don’t. As other students using other programs join, I will create more of these, to have a “library” of alternative programs and how to get the most out of them.

As long as you’re a member and your payments are up to date, you can take as long as you want with every lesson and recorded session, so you can work entirely at your own pace.

If you decide to go your own way and leave the membership, your access will cease at the end of that payment period (and we’ll all be sad to see you go).

No worries! They’re all recorded and uploaded to the member’s area usually within 48 hours.

I do try and move the days and times around to accomodate different timezones but unfortunately it’s impossible to cater for everyone. The majority of my students are in the UK and Europe, so our evenings seems to be the best time as this works out to mornings in Aus/NZ and afternoon in some parts of the US.

Of course!

Facebook is a great way for us to interact as a community as many people log on to the platform daily. However, if you’d rather not get involved there, we also have a Discord server, and dedicated forums where you can ask questions and get feedback from me. They’re a bit quiet at the moment so you may miss some of the “Community” aspect, but can definitely get as much support there as you need!

Yes!

If you’re paying monthly, your membership will finish up at the end of that billing cycling. If you paid yearly, you can continue to use your membership until the end of the billing cycle.

Unfortunately I cannot do partial refunds.

Make sure that you cancel at least 48 hours before your next payment is due so it doesn’t get processed by your bank.

In order to keep our membership base relatively small, and for us all to have some time to get to know one another, I only open the membership periodically.

As the library of resources and recordings grows and increases in value, future memberships will likely be at a higher cost.

Then I’ll be very sad to hear that, but of course if you’re looking for something I’m not providing (for example, studio photography lessons!) then I completely understand!

To that end, if you aren’t satisfied with your membership after 14 days of joining, please get in contact and I will issue you a refund (and hopefully get some feedback to find out what I can improve upon!).

About me

I’m Emily, and with me here are Loki and Journey – you’ve probably already seen a lot of them on this website.

I know the photo there should probably be a professional headshot in clean clothes and makeup, but that’s not me. I’m out there, kneeling in the mud with my camera, cuddling pups, and when I’m not doing that, I’m teaching. In fact, for years I was teaching in a classroom full of sixty young kids – the philosophy of our school was to allow kids to play, create, experiment and investigate.

And that’s how I teach, even now. At the heart of everything is my students and how we relate to one another – my practise has always been based on their understandings, their misunderstandings, and their need for more challenges.

I don’t want to give my students set methods for creating – art doesn’t work like that. I want to look “behind the curtain” to investigate why some photos or editing techniques work, and others don’t.

I could give you credentials, but I would rather let my work (and soon enough, my students) speak for me.

I’m so excited to work with my Learning Community and my first students. I genuinely cannot wait to see their progress.
